Simple words can have a cosmic impact

You’ve probably heard something about affirmations, but maybe you’re not sure exactly what they are, how to use them, or if they really even work. Let’s take a look at what they are, the power they hold, and how you can incorporate them in your every day routine.

What is an affirmation, anyway?

An affirmation is a positive statement for a desired outcome. The affirmation is generally repeated over a period of time. This repetition of an affirmation can take place during meditation, during a morning routine, really any time you can clear your mind and focus on the affirmation clearly and deeply.

How does this help?

There are a couple of schools of thought on why affirmations work. One says that, by concentrating on your affirmation repetitively, your affirmation becomes part of your subconscious, Your subconscious then pushes you to work towards your desired outcome, eventually manifesting that outcome through your own actions.

However, on a more metaphysical level…

Declaring an affirmation and meditating on it, repeating it, and focusing on it, you are asking the divine universe, the cosmic consciousness, to bear the fruit (outcome) of the seed (affirmation) that you have sown (repetition).

One of the greatest spiritual gurus and yogis of modern days, Paramahansa Yogananda, wrote:

“Words saturated with sincerity, conviction, faith, and intuition are like highly explosive vibration bombs, which, when set off, shatter the rocks of difficulties and create the change desired…Sincere words or affirmations repeated understandingly, feelingly, and willingly are sure to move the Omnipresent Cosmic Vibratory Force to render aid in your difficulty.

Appeal to that Power with infinite confidence, casting out all doubt; otherwise the arrow of your attention will be deflected from its mark.

After you have sown in the soil of Cosmic Consciousness your vibratory prayer-seed, do not pluck it out frequently to see whether or not it has germinated. Give the divine forces a chance to work uninterruptedly.”

“… In all affirmations intensity of attention comes first, but continuity and repetition mean a great deal, too. Impregnate your affirmations with devotion, will, and faith, intensely and repeatedly, unmindful of the results, which will come naturally as the fruit of your labors.”

Choosing an Affirmation

So how do you choose an affirmation? Remember, an affirmation must be for a positive desired outcome, nothing negative. It also of course doesn’t have to be a single affirmation. It really depends on your current circumstances.

For example, let’s say you are having difficulties in forgiving someone who may have hurt you in the past. You might choose an affirmation such as: “I forgive those who have done harm to me in the past and peacefully detach myself from them“.

Examples of powerful affirmations:

  • I will help weeping ones to smile, by smiling myself, even when it is difficult.
  • I’m blessed with deep ever lasting health
  • I love myself
  • I am peace
  • I choose to make positive healthy choices for myself
  • All my relationships are loving and harmonious

Practicing the Affirmation

Now that you know what an affirmation is, its power, and have chosen your affirmation(s), let’s get down to the business of making it work for you. There is no one way to practice your affirmation. Different things work for different people. However, Paramahansa Yogananda provided the following instructions as one way to put your affirmation into practice:

  1. Choose an affirmation for your particular need
  2. Sit with spine erect.
  3. Close your eyes and gently focus your gaze and concentrate at the point between the eyebrows.
  4. Take a deep breath and exhale it, three times. Relax the body and keep it motionless….
Cast away anxiety, distrust, and worry….
  5. Repeat all of the affirmation, first loudly, then softly and more slowly, until your voice becomes a whisper.
  6. Then gradually affirm it mentally only, without moving the tongue or the lips, until you feel that you have attained deep, unbroken concentration — not unconsciousness, but a profound continuity of uninterrupted thought.
  7. If you continue with your mental affirmation, and go still deeper, you will feel a sense of increasing joy and peace.”

Using Crystals with Affirmations

Using crystals in conjunction with your daily affirmation ritual can even further enhance your results. Quartz, being a natural energy amplifier, is one of the best crystals to use for affirmations. Consider meditating in front of a crystal grid that includes quartz, kyanite, amazonite, and selenite.
